McKinney Falls & the Perseid Meteor Shower

Me and a couple friends headed out to McKinney Falls State Park a few weeks back to try and catch a glimpse of the Perseid Meteor shower.  This prolific shower is most visible in the summer time months between July and August when the Earth crosses paths with the Comet-Swift Tutle.  Astronomers predicted that there would be an outburst of the comets debris encountering the earth's atmosphere this year, and well their prediction was accurate.  We stayed up until the moons light floated behind the horizon and in the early morning hours of August 13th, we got to watch a light show in the sky.  The fleeting feeling of excitement you have as you watch a fiery burst shoot across the skyline in a split second is invigorating and awe inspiring.  It helps ground you and makes your sense of wonder sore.  Its a humbling experience reminding us that we are one small part of an expansive universe and helps us reconnect with our true source.

McKinney Falls has a rich history in central Texas and is a wilderness wonderland only 20 minutes out from the hustle and bustle of downtown Austin.  We explored the land, swam in Onion Creek, set up hammocks for relaxing/"sleeping", cooked veggie packs and proceeded into the night to watch the meteors.  It was hot, with lots of mosquitos & dare I say it chiggers, but an experience I most certainly won't forget.

Here are some moments from that journey.  Despite not having adequate equipment to fully capture the meteors in long exposure night sky images (I'll get there one day ;)), I did document some of the day time fun we experienced on this hot summer camping session.

SXSW 2016

Fall & Winter Family Sessions

The fall and winter season always represents a time to slow down, play in the piles of fallen leaves, and appreciate those special people that matter most in your life.  I got to catch up with several families this season and help them capture some precious moments.  Here are some of the highlights from my winter family sessions.

Taos, New Mexico

This past September I had the chance to travel to the northern mountains of New Mexico with some close friends and their family.  This was my first time visiting Taos, a small little art town tucked away in the mountainous desert land of New Mexico, and I was completely blown away by its rich culture and beauty.  With a history embedded in Native American traditions, the pueblo style homes, art boutiques, turquoise jewelry and the awe inspiring natural landscapes made for quite the adventure.  I have compiled a series of images that highlight some of my favorite spots throughout this land.  I hope my images can do this remarkable place a little justice.

Nature Photography Workshop

As a part time educator and a part time photographer, I am very excited to have the opportunity this Sunday to combine both of my passions together in a two hour nature photography workshop at Lockhart State Park.  In this workshop, I will be giving a brief intro into the history of photography and the state of photography today, then will be teaching all about the basics of DSLR manual camera settings, some guidelines to creating well composed and aesthetically appealing photographs, and will end with a lovely nature walk around the park where we will focus in on how to take landscape shots, macro and zoom shots and action shots out in my favorite place of all, Mother Nature.  This workshop is sold out, however please stay tuned, because there will be plenty more opportunities like this for you to come and learn with me in the future!  Thanks for the support.

Peace, Love & Nature :)

Chris & Jeannette - 5/23/15

The thunderstorms and massive flooding, Texas hasn't seen in over a decade, didn't put any kind of damper on the celebration of love that these two shared at the Heritage House in Dripping Springs, Texas.  It was a very memorable wedding ceremony and I was so privileged to get to capture some great moments for Chris & Jeannette.  I wish you all a lifetime of love and happiness.  Enjoy these photos from the wedding.

Baby Brylee

I'd like to welcome to the world my beautiful baby niece Brylee Rae Downey.  Here are some newborn photos of this sweet girl & some photos I took of my sister on her first Mother's Day.  I'd expect there to be a lot of photo shoots to come for this little one :)

Holiday Portrait Fun

This past holiday season was the real kick off for my photo business!  I teamed up with a dear friend Kristen Cannon, who happens to also be a graphic designer at KC Designs to offer a holiday photo card package!  We were very successful as new comers to this creative business and had a lot of fun working with several families and individuals to provide them with custom made photo cards that they could share with all of their loved ones.  Here are some of my favorite moments I had while shooting.
